Common Causes of a Leaking Heat Pump

If you’ve noticed water pooling around your heat pump, or water dripping that’s more than normal condensation, then its time to take a closer look as to what’s going on.

Common Cause #1: Clogged Drain Line

One of the most prevalent reasons for a leaking heat pump is an issue with the condensate drainage system. During the cooling process, heat pumps remove humidity from the air, creating condensation. This water is typically collected in a pan and drained away. However, if the drain line becomes clogged with dirt, debris, or algae, the water can back up and overflow, resulting in leakage around the unit.

Common Cause #2: Frozen Evaporator Coils

Another common cause of leaking water from a heat pump is from ice melting on the cooling coils. This happens when the system loses refrigerant. Leaks in refrigerant will cause ice to build on the coils. When the ice melts, it creates puddles below the unit that makes it look as though the unit is leaking. Alternatively, if the heat pump’s evaporator coils freeze due to inadequate airflow or refrigerant issues, then the ice can melt and lead to water leakage around the unit. This can happen when the heat pump operates in cooling mode under low outdoor temperatures or when the air filters are dirty and restrict the airflow.

Common Cause #3: Defrost Cycle

During the heating season, heat pumps go through a defrost cycle to melt accumulated frost on the outdoor coils. If you notice water pooling at your outside unit during the winter, chances are this is part of your heat pump’s normal operation. The unit is designed to defrost the outdoor unit to melt ice when the condensation starts to freeze. This water will drip to the ground and re-freeze and is not an indication of a leak.

These are three of the most common causes of water puddling or pooling around a heat pump, or otherwise leaking water. However, if you are noticing your heat pump leaking water, it’s always a good idea to get it checked out by a licensed, reputable HVAC professional.
